Shelly is one of our Moms that came to the shelter this past Summer. She came with three beautiful kittens that we named Seth, Sean and Sammy. Shelly was a terrific mom! She kept her kittens clean and well fed. She nursed them until they were big enough to eat on their own from a bowl and she taught them to be very well-behaved little guys. The three boys had no problem wooing the hearts of everyone. We called them our little "Calendar Kitties" because they looked like they belonged on a calendar! They were beautiful and perfect! The boys were adopted as soon as they were neutered and vaccinated and all went to their forever homes.
Now it is Shelly's turn. Shelly didn't want to come out of her crate. We would leave the door open so she could come and go and all she would do was jump down long enough to swat another cat in the head and jump back up and cuddle up. The volunteers would come in to clean and everyone would stop to say hello to Shelly and she was happy to see everyone and get her daily petting sessions and brushing. We had noticed that it was taking a long time for her milk to dry up and that one of her breasts had a lump. It was a good size lump and very solid. Our vet had checked her out and told us to apply raw cabbage leaves to the area and wrap her mid section up. The cabbage would draw the milk out. We did this for what seemed like months as well as doing warm soaks. Nothing was working. We finally made an appointment for her to get spayed by another vet and asked him to check out this problem she was having. He ended up removing the mass that was quite large but contained and suggested that we get it tested immediately! He said it did not look good at all! One of our volunteers took it to another vet that could send it out to be tested. Now we had to wait a few days for the results. In the meantime...poor Shelly had been spayed, had this mass removed from her chest and also had a bad tooth removed. She was so miserable. We gave her pain meds and made special blender foods for her. She got a nice new soft bed to cuddle in. She was looking just terrible. Everyone was worried about her! Then the results came...the mass was a tumor and it tested positive for Cancer! We were heart-broken. We spoke to the first vet that removed the tumor and he was hopeful that he removed all of it. He also told us she was alot older than the 2-3years that we were told. We decided that we could not and would not start her on cancer treatment. The vet said that was fine but we should have her xrayed every 3 months. We all talked it over and decided that we would treat her Holistically and let her be comfortable. As long as she is not in any pain and not suffering we would let her stay with us permanently and she could be our shelter cat.
Our wish for her is that we can find an understanding person or family that can love her and give her a home to live in for whatever time she has left on this earth. She could be here a year or ten years! We do not know. We do know that she loves to sit on your lap and just be petted. She loves to be held and cuddled. She loves to be brushed and have conversations. She just loves to be LOVED! She deserves a companion of her own!
When the time comes...if she is in pain and the vets say ok. We will say our sad goodbyes and let her go. She will know she was LOVED and she will be remembered by us all!
If after reading this and giving it some serious thought; if you can be that person we are wishing for. Please call us and we will work with you for the rest of her life to keep her happy and loved.
Thank You from ALL the volunteers at Precious Paws Rescue!
